Vanilla Spiced Pear Butter: Amazing Fall Treat

  • Author: basmer
  • Total Time: 1 hour 50 minutes

  • Diet: Vegan

Description

This Vanilla Spiced Pear Butter is a smooth, sweet, and aromatic spread perfect for holiday breakfasts or as a homemade gift. It combines the warm flavors of vanilla and spices with the natural sweetness of pears.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups pears (peeled, cored, and diced)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar (adjust to your sweetness preference)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and dice the pears. Place them in a large saucepan with the water, and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Cook for 10-15 minutes, until the pears are soft and starting to break down.
  2. Use an immersion blender to purée the mixture until smooth. If you don’t have an immersion blender, transfer the pears to a regular blender and purée in batches. Return the purée to the saucepan.
  3. Stir in the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract. Add the lemon juice to help brighten the flavor and balance the sweetness. Stir to combine everything evenly.
  4. Lower the heat to low and simmer the pear butter for about 1 to 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally. The mixture should reduce and thicken to a spreadable consistency. Continue to simmer until it reaches your desired consistency.
  5. If you want to preserve your pear butter, pour it into sterilized jars while still hot, leaving about 1/4-inch headspace. Seal the jars and process them in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes. Alternatively, store the pear butter in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
  6. Once the pear butter has cooled, serve it on toast, scones, or pancakes.

Notes

  • Pears: Bartlett or Bosc pears work well due to their natural sweetness and soft texture when cooked. Drain canned pears before using.
  • Sugar: Adjust sugar based on pear sweetness or use honey or maple syrup for a healthier option.
  • Spices: Experiment with cloves, allspice, or ginger for a unique twist.
  • Control the sweetness: Taste and adjust sugar and spices as needed while simmering.
  • Texture: Cook until thick and spreadable, but not too thick.
  • Add extra flavor: Consider adding ginger, cloves, or citrus zest.
