Description
Spicy Jalapeno Onion Smash Burgers are flavorful, juicy burgers with a crispy exterior, featuring the heat of jalapenos and the sweetness of onions.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 jalapeno, diced
- 1/2 onion, finely chopped
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 burger buns
- Cheese slices (optional)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, diced jalapeno, finely chopped onion, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix gently with clean hands until just combined.
- Divide the beef mixture into four equal portions and gently form them into balls.
- Heat a skillet over medium-high heat until hot.
- Place the beef balls into the hot skillet, leaving space between them.
- Using a sturdy spatula, firmly smash each meatball flat to about 1/2 inch thickness.
- Cook for 3-4 minutes on one side until a deep brown crust forms.
- Flip the burgers and cook for another 3-4 minutes on the other side until cooked through.
- If using cheese, place a slice on top of each burger during the last minute of cooking to melt.
- Remove the spicy jalapeno onion smash burgers from the skillet and let them rest for one minute.
- Serve on burger buns.
Notes
- Adjust the amount of jalapeno to control the spice level.
- Removing jalapeno seeds and membranes reduces heat.
- Using 80/20 ground beef provides optimal juiciness.
- Do not overmix the meat to keep patties tender.
- Resist the urge to flip the burgers too early to develop a good crust.
- Resting the burgers after cooking helps redistribute juices.
- Toast burger buns for added flavor and texture.
- Consider variations like adding cumin, chili powder, or different cheeses.
- Serve with classic sides like french fries, coleslaw, or a green salad.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
- Reheat burgers in a skillet over medium heat for best results.
