This Southern Fried Cabbage with Bacon recipe delivers rich, smoky flavor with just one skillet and simple ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large head green cabbage, cored and chopped
  • 6 slices thick-cut bacon, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika (optional)
  • 0.5 tsp brown sugar (optional)

  1. In a large skillet, fry bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove and set aside on paper towels. Leave about 2 tablespoons of bacon drippings in the pan.
  2. Add sliced onions to the hot drippings. Cook until softened and golden. Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
  3. Add chopped cabbage. Stir occasionally and cook until wilted and lightly browned on the edges, about 10–12 minutes.
  4. Season with salt, pepper, red pepper flakes, and optional vinegar and brown sugar. Stir to coat evenly.
  5. Return bacon to the skillet and toss everything together. Serve hot with a squeeze of lemon or dash of hot sauce.
