Savory Southern-Style Smothered Chicken and Rice recipe. Juicy, seasoned chicken smothered in rich homemade gravy and served over fluffy white rice.

- 4–6 bone-in, skin-on chicken pieces (thighs or drumsticks)
- 1 cup long-grain white rice
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 1 bell pepper, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups chicken broth (plus more for rice)
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons cooking oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- Optional: cayenne pepper (to taste), fresh parsley or green onions for garnish
Instructions
- Season chicken with salt, pepper, and paprika. Dredge in flour.
- Heat oil in a large skillet. Brown chicken on all sides, then remove.
- Sauté onions and bell peppers until soft. Stir in garlic.
- Sprinkle in flour, cook for 1–2 minutes. Gradually stir in chicken broth to make smooth gravy.
- Add chicken back to skillet. Cover and simmer for 30–40 minutes until tender.
- In a separate pot, cook rice in broth until tender.
- Plate rice, top with chicken and gravy. Garnish as desired.
