Savory Croissant Breakfast Bake: 6-Ingredient Bliss

  • Author: basmer
  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

This Savory Croissant Breakfast Bake transforms flaky croissants into a rich, custardy casserole. It’s filled with cheese, vegetables, and optional meats, making it perfect for brunch or holidays. Prepare it ahead for a warm and satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large croissants (preferably day-old, cut into chunks)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (such as cheddar, Swiss, or mozzarella)
  • 1 cup diced cooked ham, bacon, or sausage (optional)
  • 1 cup diced bell peppers (any color)
  • 1/2 cup diced onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh spinach
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika (optional)
  • Fresh herbs (like parsley or chives) for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Spread croissant chunks evenly in the baking dish.
  3. Sprinkle diced bell peppers, onion, spinach, and cooked meat (if using) over the croissants.
  4. Add half of the shredded cheese on top.
  5. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and paprika (if using) until combined.
  6. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the croissant and vegetable layers. Press gently to ensure croissants absorb liquid.
  7. Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top.
  8. (Optional) Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or overnight, to allow croissants to soak.
  9. If chilled, let the casserole sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes.
  10. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown and the egg is set.
  11. Garnish with fresh herbs, if desired.
  12. Slice and serve warm.

Notes

  • Day-old croissants work best as they hold their shape better than fresh ones.
  • Avoid overbaking to prevent the casserole from becoming dry.
  • Chilling the casserole before baking helps meld flavors and ensures better liquid absorption.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat individual portions in the microwave or oven.
