Description
Salted caramel waffles are a delightful breakfast treat combining fluffy waffles with rich salted caramel sauce, perfect for a special brunch or cozy weekend breakfast. This recipe offers a deliciously sweet and savory experience.
Ingredients
- For the Waffles:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 3/4 cups milk
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- For the Salted Caramel Sauce:
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt (or to taste)
Instructions
- Make the Salted Caramel Sauce: Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar and cook for 2 minutes until dissolving. Carefully add heavy cream, stirring until smooth. Bring to a gentle boil and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and sea salt. Set aside.
- Prepare the Waffle Batter: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, whisk eggs, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and stir until just combined; do not overmix.
- Cook the Waffles: Preheat your waffle iron. Lightly grease if needed. Pour batter onto the hot waffle iron and cook until golden brown and crisp, about 5-7 minutes. Repeat with remaining batter.
- Serve: Plate the waffles warm. Drizzle generously with salted caramel sauce. Optionally, garnish with extra sea salt or whipped cream. Serve immediately.
Notes
- For a healthier option, use whole wheat flour, almond milk or skim milk, and reduce sugar in the caramel sauce or use a sugar substitute.
- Salted caramel waffles pair well with fresh fruit, whipped cream, or a side of bacon or sausage.
- Avoid overmixing the batter, not preheating the waffle iron, or using too much batter to prevent common mistakes.
- Store leftover waffles in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days; reheat to restore crispiness. Store salted caramel sauce separately for up to a week.
