Description

These Red Velvet Sugar Cookies are soft, chewy, and perfect for any occasion, especially Valentine’s Day. They have a rich red velvet flavor with a white chocolate peanut butter heart in the center.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar, plus extra for rolling
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon red gel food coloring
  • 1/2 cup + 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/8 teaspoon fine salt
  • 6 white chocolate peanut butter hearts (like Reese’s)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a small baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. In a medium bowl, stir together the melted butter, sugar, egg yolk, vanilla extract, and red food coloring until fully combined.
  3. Sprinkle the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt evenly over the wet ingredients. Stir until everything is just combined into a dough.
  4. Flatten the dough and divide it into six even portions. Roll each portion into a ball and coat in granulated sugar.
  5. Place the dough balls on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them evenly apart. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until they start to crackle and appear dry on top.
  6. Let the cookies rest on the baking sheet for 2 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Once the cookies have cooled for about 10 minutes, gently press a white chocolate peanut butter heart into the center of each cookie. Allow them to cool in the fridge for 30 minutes to set the hearts.

Notes

  • These cookies are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to a week.
  • Adjust the baking time based on your oven’s performance.
  • Use gel food coloring for a more vibrant red color.
