Description

Homemade Pizza Sauce Recipe

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (28 oz) whole peeled San Marzano tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar or honey
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste

Instructions

  1. Pour the whole peeled San Marzano tomatoes into a bowl and crush them by hand or with a potato masher.
  2. Warm the extra virgin olive oil in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for just 60 seconds.
  3. Stir the dried oregano, basil, onion powder, and red pepper flakes into the warm oil for 30 seconds.
  4. Add the crushed tomatoes, salt, black pepper, and sugar to the pan. Bring it to a very gentle bubble, then turn the heat to low.
  5. Stir in the tomato paste to give the sauce a sturdy, spreadable body. Simmer uncovered for 10 to 15 minutes.
  6. Remove the sauce from the heat and let it cool completely before spreading it on your dough.
