Homemade Pizza Sauce Recipe
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 can (28 oz) whole peeled San Marzano tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 3 cloves garlic
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar or honey
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
Instructions
- Pour the whole peeled San Marzano tomatoes into a bowl and crush them by hand or with a potato masher.
- Warm the extra virgin olive oil in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for just 60 seconds.
- Stir the dried oregano, basil, onion powder, and red pepper flakes into the warm oil for 30 seconds.
- Add the crushed tomatoes, salt, black pepper, and sugar to the pan. Bring it to a very gentle bubble, then turn the heat to low.
- Stir in the tomato paste to give the sauce a sturdy, spreadable body. Simmer uncovered for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Remove the sauce from the heat and let it cool completely before spreading it on your dough.
