Description

Enjoy the aromatic and comforting flavors of Lebanese Hashweh, a delightful spiced rice dish with ground meat and nuts.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound Ground Meat (Beef or Lamb) (Can substitute with turkey or chicken for lighter option)
  • 1 medium Onion (Chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon Allspice
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon Nutmeg
  • 1 cup Basmati Rice (Can substitute with other long-grain rice; adjust cooking times accordingly)
  • 1.5 cups Chicken Broth (Can use water as an alternative)
  • 1/4 cup Pine Nuts (Toasted)
  • 1/4 cup Slivered Almonds (Toasted)

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat a splash of oil over medium heat. Add chopped onions and sauté until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  2. Introduce the ground meat to the pot. Cook until browned and the meat is no longer pink, about 6-8 minutes. Stir in the warm spices and mix well.
  3. Stir in the Basmati rice, ensuring each grain is coated with the meat mixture. Season with salt and stir for an additional 2 minutes.
  4. Pour in the chicken broth and bring to a rolling boil. Cover the pot, reduce heat to low, and allow to simmer for about 20 minutes.
  5. While the rice is cooking, toast the pine nuts and slivered almonds in a dry skillet over medium heat for about 3-4 minutes.
  6. After cooking, remove the pot from heat and let it stand covered for 5 minutes. Fluff the rice with a fork and top with the toasted nuts.
