Description

Enjoy Korean Chicken Bao Buns, a delicious dish featuring tender chicken in a sweet and spicy Korean-inspired sauce, all nestled within soft, fluffy bao buns. This recipe offers a perfect blend of flavors and textures, making it an ideal choice for a casual meal or a festive gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Chicken:
  • 500g (1 lb) boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey or brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (for garnish)
  • For the Bao Buns:
  • 1012 pre-made bao buns (or homemade using 300g all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon instant yeast, 1 tablespoon sugar, ½ teaspoon salt, 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, 150ml warm water)
  • For Toppings:
  • Sliced cucumber (optional)
  • Fresh cilantro leaves (optional)
  • Sliced green onions (optional)
  • Pickled vegetables (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chicken Marinade: In a large bowl, mix soy sauce, sesame oil, honey, gochujang, garlic, rice vinegar, and ginger. Add the chicken pieces, toss to coat, and marinate for at least 30 minutes or up to 2 hours.
  2. Cook the Chicken: Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the marinated chicken and cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and cooked through. Remove from the pan and set aside.
  3. Steam the Bao Buns: If using pre-made bao buns, steam them according to package instructions. If making your own, steam them for 10-12 minutes until fluffy.
  4. Assemble the Bao Buns: Carefully open each steamed bun. Spoon in the cooked Korean chicken.
  5. Garnish and Serve: Top with sesame seeds, sliced cucumber, cilantro, green onions, and pickled vegetables as desired. Serve the Korean chicken bao buns warm.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, lightly toast the sesame seeds before garnishing.
  • Add more gochujang or chili oil for a spicier kick.
  • Avoid over-steaming the bao buns to maintain their fluffy texture.
  • For a vegetarian option, substitute chicken with crispy tofu or tempeh.
  • Use gluten-free soy sauce and bao buns for a gluten-free version.
