Description

Create spooky and delicious Jack-O-Cheese sandwiches this Halloween. This recipe transforms classic grilled cheese by carving jack-o’-lantern faces into the bread, allowing gooey cheese to glow through. It’s a fun, easy, and customizable treat perfect for kids and parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices of sandwich bread
  • 4 slices of cheddar or American cheese
  • 2 tablespoons of butter, softened
  • Optional: tomato soup or spooky dipping sauce for serving
  • Optional Add-Ins: Whole grain bread, low-fat cheese, thin slice of tomato, sprinkle of Italian herbs, spinach or carrot slices, mozzarella, gouda, brie, provolone, caramelized onions, roasted peppers, grilled chicken

Instructions

  1. Spread butter on one side of each bread slice.
  2. On two bread slices, carve jack-o’-lantern faces using a sharp knife or small cookie cutter.
  3. Place two cheese slices on each of the uncut bread slices.
  4. Top with the carved bread slice, buttered side up.
  5. Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  6. Grill the sandwiches for 2–3 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is oozing through the cut-outs.
  7. Serve hot and crispy.

Notes

  • For best results, do not cut the face openings too large to prevent cheese leakage.
  • Use ample cheese for a better ooze and visual appeal.
  • Cook on medium heat to prevent the bread from burning before the cheese melts.
  • Lightly press the sandwiches while cooking for better sealing and even browning.
  • Leftovers can be wrapped in foil, refrigerated for up to two days, and reheated in a toaster oven or skillet.
  • For a time-saver, use pre-sliced cheese, mayonnaise instead of butter, or bake multiple sandwiches at 375°F (190°C) for 10 minutes, flipping once.
