Ingredients
Scale
- 1/4 cup water (lukewarm)
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon cane sugar
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons sea salt
- 1/4 cup cane sugar
- 4 tablespoons salted butter (softened)
- 2 large eggs
- 3/4 cup buttermilk (warm)
- 4 tablespoons salted butter
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 48 ounces vegetable oil
Instructions
- Start by adding the 1/4 cup of lukewarm water, active dry yeast and 1 teaspoon of sugar to a small glass measuring cup, whisking together until well dissolved. Set aside to proof.
- In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and salt.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream the rest of the sugar with the softened butter until well combined.
- Beat in each egg, one at a time, scraping the bowl as needed.
- Add the proofed yeast and warm buttermilk to the egg mixture and whisk together.
- Add the dry mixture to the wet mixture and mix until you have a soft, somewhat sticky dough.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
- Once risen, turn the dough out onto a floured work surface, roll it out to about 1/2″ thickness.
- Cut out donuts using a donut cutter.
- Place donuts on parchment paper, cover with a towel, and let rise for another 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
- While donuts are rising, mix the powdered sugar glaze in a saucepan over medium-low heat until the butter melts. Add powdered sugar and cornstarch to make the glaze smooth.
- Heat the oil in a skillet to 350-375ºF.
- Fry donuts, turning them once until golden brown on both sides.
- Place fried donuts on a wire rack to drip off excess oil.
- Coat each donut in the glaze and let them harden on parchment paper or a baking sheet.
- Enjoy your homemade donuts warm and fresh.
