Description
Hawaiian Roll French Toast is a sweet and fluffy breakfast treat. This recipe uses soft Hawaiian rolls soaked in a rich custard and cooked until golden brown. It’s a delightful twist on classic French toast, perfect for brunch or a special breakfast.
Ingredients
- 12 Hawaiian rolls (slider size)
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup milk (or dairy-free alternative)
- 1/4 cup heavy cream (optional)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- Maple syrup (for serving)
- Fresh fruit (for serving)
- Powdered sugar (optional, for serving)
Instructions
- Prepare the egg mixture: In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream (if using), sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
- Prepare the Hawaiian rolls: Slice the Hawaiian rolls in half horizontally. Dip each roll half into the egg mixture, letting them soak for a few seconds to absorb the custard.
- Cook the French toast: Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter. Place soaked rolls cut-side down in the skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes until golden brown, then flip and cook for another 2-3 minutes. Add remaining butter as needed for cooking batches.
- Serve: Plate the cooked Hawaiian roll French toast. Drizzle with maple syrup, top with fresh fruit, and dust with powdered sugar if desired. Serve warm.
Notes
- For a tropical twist, add a splash of coconut milk to the egg mixture.
- Experiment with toppings like shredded coconut or whipped cream.
- Add chopped nuts or nut butter between roll halves before soaking for extra crunch.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days and reheated.
- This recipe can be made gluten-free by using gluten-free Hawaiian rolls.
- The egg mixture can be prepared the night before.
- Cooked French toast can be frozen for up to 2 months.
