Description

This creamy and cheesy dish features layers of thinly sliced potatoes and diced ham, all baked to perfection. It’s a comforting main course or side dish that’s perfect for gatherings.


Ingredients

  • 2 lbs russet potatoes (thinly sliced)
  • 1 cup cooked ham (diced)
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Fresh parsley (chopped for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat, then whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until golden.
  3. Gradually add the heavy cream and milk, whisking until the mixture thickens and bubbles, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Stir in garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper, then mix in 1 ½ cups of cheddar cheese until melted.
  5. In a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes and half of the diced ham.
  6. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the first layer, then repeat with remaining potatoes, ham, and cheese sauce.
  7. Top with the remaining ½ cup of cheddar cheese.
  8. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  9. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden brown and tender.
  10. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving and garnish with fresh parsley.
