- 2 lbs russet potatoes (thinly sliced)
- 1 cup cooked ham (diced)
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup milk
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
- Fresh parsley (chopped for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat, then whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until golden.
- Gradually add the heavy cream and milk, whisking until the mixture thickens and bubbles, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper, then mix in 1 ½ cups of cheddar cheese until melted.
- In a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes and half of the diced ham.
- Pour half of the cheese sauce over the first layer, then repeat with remaining potatoes, ham, and cheese sauce.
- Top with the remaining ½ cup of cheddar cheese.
- Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden brown and tender.
- Let cool for 10 minutes before serving and garnish with fresh parsley.
