Halloween Crinkle Cookies: 15-Minute Spooky Delight

  • Author: basmer
  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 24 cookies 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

These Halloween Crinkle Cookies offer a rich cocoa flavor and a chewy texture, perfect for kids and parties. They feature dramatic white crackles on top, achieved with a double sugar coating, and can be decorated with candy eyes for a spooky look.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup natural cocoa or 1/4 cup black cocoa + 1/4 cup natural cocoa
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp fine salt
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (plus extra for coating)
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup neutral oil or 1/2 cup soft butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/23/4 cup confectioners’ sugar (for coating)
  • Candy eyes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk together the flour, cocoa powder(s), baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl.
  3. In a separate large bowl, beat the granulated sugar, brown sugar, oil (or butter), eggs, and vanilla extract until the mixture is glossy.
  4. Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until just combined. The dough will be sticky.
  5. Chill the dough for 10–20 minutes to make it easier to handle and roll. This step is optional but recommended for neater cookies.
  6. Scoop portions of dough, about 1–1.5 tablespoons each. Roll each portion first in granulated sugar, then generously in confectioners’ sugar. This double coating is key for the crinkle effect.
  7. Place the coated dough balls about 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets.
  8. Bake for 8–11 minutes, or until the edges are set but the centers are still soft.
  9. If using, press candy eyes onto the warm cookies immediately after removing them from the oven.
  10. Let the Halloween crinkle cookies cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For the most dramatic white cracks, ensure a thorough double coating in granulated and confectioners’ sugar.
  • Using black cocoa will give your Halloween crinkle cookies a striking, deep black color.
  • For a red velvet variation, add red food coloring and a teaspoon of cocoa powder to the dough.
  • You can freeze dough balls for up to 3 months. Roll them in sugars and bake from frozen, adding 1-2 minutes to the baking time.
