Description

A classic green bean casserole recipe perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds fresh green beans (trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces)
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 1 1/2 cups crispy fried onions (divided)
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or casserole dish.
  2. In a large pot of boiling salted water, blanch the fresh green beans for about 5 minutes until they are bright green and slightly tender. Drain and immediately transfer them to an ice bath to stop the cooking process. Drain again and set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, garlic powder, black pepper, and a pinch of salt. Stir until well blended.
  4. Add the blanched green beans to the sauce mixture and stir to coat the beans evenly. If using, fold in the shredded cheddar cheese.
  5. Transfer the green bean mixture to the prepared baking dish. Top with 1 cup of crispy fried onions, spreading them evenly over the top.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the casserole is hot and bubbly. Remove from the oven and sprinkle the remaining fried onions on top. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes until the onions are golden brown.
  7. Allow the casserole to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy this comforting dish as a side at your next dinner or holiday gathering.

Notes

  • Fresh Green Beans: Use frozen green beans for convenience; just thaw them before use.
  • Cream of Mushroom Soup: Substitute with homemade mushroom sauce for a fresher flavor.
  • Cheddar Cheese: Use other cheeses like mozzarella or Monterey Jack for a different taste.
