Description
A classic green bean casserole recipe perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 pounds fresh green beans (trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces)
- 1 can (10.5 ounces) cream of mushroom soup
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
- 1 1/2 cups crispy fried onions (divided)
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or casserole dish.
- In a large pot of boiling salted water, blanch the fresh green beans for about 5 minutes until they are bright green and slightly tender. Drain and immediately transfer them to an ice bath to stop the cooking process. Drain again and set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, garlic powder, black pepper, and a pinch of salt. Stir until well blended.
- Add the blanched green beans to the sauce mixture and stir to coat the beans evenly. If using, fold in the shredded cheddar cheese.
- Transfer the green bean mixture to the prepared baking dish. Top with 1 cup of crispy fried onions, spreading them evenly over the top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the casserole is hot and bubbly. Remove from the oven and sprinkle the remaining fried onions on top. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes until the onions are golden brown.
- Allow the casserole to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy this comforting dish as a side at your next dinner or holiday gathering.
Notes
- Fresh Green Beans: Use frozen green beans for convenience; just thaw them before use.
- Cream of Mushroom Soup: Substitute with homemade mushroom sauce for a fresher flavor.
- Cheddar Cheese: Use other cheeses like mozzarella or Monterey Jack for a different taste.
