  • 1 cup hot water
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×9 inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Transfer to a large mixing bowl and stir in brown sugar, molasses, and egg until combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring gently. Add hot water and mix until smooth.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let the cake cool completely before frosting.
  6. For the frosting, beat the softened cream cheese and butter together until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, one cup at a time, until fully incorporated.
