Description
Fusion French Onion Sausage Rolls blend savory sausage with caramelized onions and cheese, wrapped in flaky pastry.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound (450g) ground sausage (pork, chicken, or a plant-based alternative)
- 1 large onion (thinly sliced)
- 2 tablespoons butter (or olive oil)
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme (or fresh thyme, chopped)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper (to taste)
- 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed, if frozen)
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (or Swiss cheese)
- 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
- Fresh parsley (for garnish, optional)
Instructions
- Sauté Onions: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring frequently, until they are caramelized and golden brown (about 15-20 minutes).
- Add Flavor: Stir in the balsamic vinegar, dried thyme, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Cook for another 2 minutes until well combined. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- Mix Sausage and Onions: In a large bowl, combine the ground sausage with the caramelized onion mixture. Mix until fully incorporated.
- Add Cheese: Fold in the shredded Gruyère cheese, mixing until evenly distributed.
- Prepare Puff Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet to smooth out any creases. Cut it into rectangles (about 4×6 inches).
- Fill Pastry: Place a generous spoonful of the sausage filling along one edge of each rectangle, leaving space at the edges.
- Roll Up: Carefully roll the pastry over the filling, sealing the edges with a little water. Press to seal completely.
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Egg Wash: Place the sausage rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with the beaten egg for a golden finish.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
- Garnish: Once baked, remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
- Enjoy: Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce, such as mustard or a creamy dip.
