Decadent chocolate chip red velvet waffles with cream cheese frosting are a cozy and indulgent breakfast treat, perfect for brunch or special occasions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (240g)
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar (150g)
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk (415ml)
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil (120ml)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips (175g)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese (225g), softened
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (55g), softened
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar (180g), sifted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons milk (15-30ml)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions (about 5 minutes). Lightly grease the grids with non-stick spray or brush with oil.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and granulated sugar.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, red food coloring, and vanilla extract until smooth and well blended.
  4. Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring gently with a rubber spatula until just combined. Do not overmix; a few lumps are okay.
  5. Fold in the mini chocolate chips carefully to distribute evenly.
  6. Pour about 3/4 cup (180ml) of batter onto the center of the hot waffle iron, then close the lid. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes or until the waffle is crisp on the outside and springs back when touched.
  7. Carefully remove the waffle and place it on a cooling rack to keep crisp. Repeat with remaining batter, greasing the iron as needed.
  8. While waffles cook, prepare the cream cheese frosting: beat softened cream cheese and butter with an electric mixer until smooth (about 2 minutes). Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla, mixing until fluffy. Add milk 1 tablespoon at a time until frosting reaches a drizzling consistency.
  9. Serve waffles warm, drizzled generously with cream cheese frosting. Optionally add fresh berries or a dusting of powdered sugar.

Notes

  • Serve immediately for the best texture.
  • Store leftover waffles in an airtight container in the fridge.
  • Reheat waffles in a toaster for crispiness.
