Description

Homemade Apple Pie with tips on egg wash and best apples for baking.


Ingredients

  • 6 cups apples (about 6 medium peeled, cored and cut into 1/4 inch thick slices)
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 pastry for double pie crust
  • 23 tablespoons butter (cut into small pieces)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F.
  2. Line a 9-in. pie plate with bottom crust; trim crust even with edge. Set aside.
  3. Add apples and remaining ingredients to a bowl and mix to combine.
  4. Spoon apple mixture into crust-lined pie plate, then dot apples with butter.
  5. Roll out second pie crust and place on top of apple mixture.
  6. Press edges of both pie crust together to seal and crimp edges.
  7. Cut slits in several places in top crust.
  8. Brush top of pie with egg wash and sprinkle with sugar.
  9. Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes, then lower temperature to 375°F and continue baking for 30 minutes or until apples are tender and crust is golden brown.
  10. Cool on cooling rack before serving.
