Description

Churro French Toast perfectly marries the comforting warmth of classic French toast with the irresistible, cinnamon-sugar crunch of a freshly made churro. This recipe elevates humble ingredients into an unforgettable culinary experience, ideal for a gourmet weekend brunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices thick-cut bread (brioche or challah recommended)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for coating)
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon (for coating)

Instructions

  1. In a wide, shallow dish, combine 1/2 cup granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon. Mix well and set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together 2 large eggs, 1/2 cup whole milk, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 cup granulated sugar until smooth and well combined.
  3. Dip each slice of thick-cut bread into the custard batter, soaking for 20-30 seconds per side, ensuring it’s thoroughly moistened but not overly saturated or falling apart. Allow any excess batter to drip off.
  4. Heat 1 1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter and 1/2 tablespoon neutral cooking oil in a large non-stick griddle or skillet over medium heat. Place soaked bread slices on the hot griddle, ensuring not to overcrowd. Cook for 3-5 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through. Repeat with remaining butter, oil, and bread slices if cooking in batches.
  5. Immediately transfer each hot, cooked French toast slice to the prepared cinnamon-sugar mixture. Gently press and flip to coat both sides evenly. The heat will help the sugar adhere and create a delicious churro-like crust.
  6. Arrange the Churro French Toast on a serving platter. Dust with powdered sugar and serve immediately with your favorite toppings such as warm maple syrup, chocolate sauce, whipped cream, or fresh berries.
