Decadent Chocolate Babka: Your New Favorite Homemade Treat

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 packet Active dry yeast
  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 1/2 cup Unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup Flavorless cooking oil
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 2 large Egg yolks
  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Kosher salt
  • 8 ounces Dark chocolate
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons Cold unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup Dark brown sugar
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup Cold unsalted butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon Kosher salt

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk and sprinkle 1 tsp of sugar. Wait about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the melted butter, remaining sugar, oil, vanilla extract, egg yolks, and yeast mixture until combined.
  3. Gradually add flour and salt while stirring until a dough starts to form.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  6. While the dough rises, mix the chopped dark chocolate with ground cinnamon and cold butter until combined.
  7. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
  9. Evenly spread your chocolate mixture over the rolled dough.
  10. Roll the dough tightly into a log, then slice it into pieces.
  11. Place the slices on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover again, and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  12. Brush tops with reserved egg white mixed with a tablespoon of milk and sprinkle on streusel topping.
  13. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and your kitchen smells divine.
