Description

Caramel Apple Upside Down Cake is a delicious dessert featuring sweet apples and rich caramel.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Topping:
  • 4 medium apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • For the Cake:
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Once melted, remove from heat.
  3. Stir in the packed brown sugar and ground cinnamon until well combined. Pour the mixture into the bottom of a 9-inch round cake pan, spreading it evenly.
  4. Lay the sliced apples over the caramel mixture, arranging them in a circular pattern. Set aside.
  5. In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  6. In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy.
  7. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract, mixing until well combined.
  8. Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the flour mixture, mixing just until combined.
  9. Carefully pour the cake batter over the arranged apples in the cake pan, spreading it evenly.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  11. Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 15-20 minutes.
  12. Carefully run a knife around the edges of the cake to loosen it. Place a serving plate over the top of the cake pan and quickly invert it to release the cake onto the plate, allowing the caramel and apples to cascade over the top.
  13. Slice and serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for added indulgence.
