Description
Caramel Apple Upside Down Cake is a delicious dessert featuring sweet apples and rich caramel.
Ingredients
Scale
- For the Topping:
- 4 medium apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- For the Cake:
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a medium saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Once melted, remove from heat.
- Stir in the packed brown sugar and ground cinnamon until well combined. Pour the mixture into the bottom of a 9-inch round cake pan, spreading it evenly.
- Lay the sliced apples over the caramel mixture, arranging them in a circular pattern. Set aside.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the eggs, one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract, mixing until well combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the flour mixture, mixing just until combined.
- Carefully pour the cake batter over the arranged apples in the cake pan, spreading it evenly.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 15-20 minutes.
- Carefully run a knife around the edges of the cake to loosen it. Place a serving plate over the top of the cake pan and quickly invert it to release the cake onto the plate, allowing the caramel and apples to cascade over the top.
- Slice and serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for added indulgence.
