Description

Candy Cane Shaped Cookies: The Incredible Ultimate Holiday Recipe

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon peppermint extract
  • Red food coloring
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for icing)
  • 2 tablespoons water (for icing)
  • Crushed candy canes (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Start by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and peppermint extract until well combined.
  5. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients until just combined. The dough should be soft but not sticky.
  6. Divide the dough in half. Leave one half as it is, and add red food coloring to the other half. Mix until you achieve your desired shade of red.
  7. Wrap each portion of dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to firm up.
  8. Once chilled, take a small piece of the white dough and a small piece of the red dough. Roll each piece into a long rope, about 6 inches long. Twist them together to form a candy cane shape.
  9. Place the shaped cookies on the prepared baking sheets and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  10. Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
  11. In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar and water until you achieve a smooth consistency.
  12. Once the cookies are completely cool, drizzle the icing over the cookies and sprinkle with crushed candy canes.
