  • Author: basmer
  • Total Time: 2 hours 10 minutes
  • Yield: 12-16 shots 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

Create a spooky and unforgettable Halloween party with these bold black Jello shots. They have a dark, glossy hue and are easy to make, perfect for any themed gathering. This no-bake recipe is a DIY dream for beginners and experienced hosts alike, resulting in an eye-catching black gelatin treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (3 oz) box black cherry or grape Jello
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • ½ cup cold water
  • ½ cup black soda (like black cherry soda or cola)
  • Black food coloring, as needed
  • Optional: activated charcoal or black gel tint for a richer black shade
  • Optional garnish: Halloween-themed sprinkles or edible glitter
  • Optional for décor: Plastic spiders, syringes, or test tubes

Instructions

  1. Boil 1 cup of water.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the Jello powder with boiling water, stirring until fully dissolved (about 2 minutes).
  3. Add ½ cup cold water and ½ cup of black soda. Stir to combine.
  4. Add black food coloring one drop at a time until you reach your desired shade of black. For a deeper tone, a small pinch of activated charcoal or a few drops of gel color can help.
  5. Pour the liquid into plastic shot cups or a silicone mold.
  6. Carefully transfer to the fridge and let chill for at least 2–3 hours, or until completely set.
  7. Garnish with spooky toppings if desired, and serve cold.

Notes

  • Use black cherry jello for the darkest natural base. Grape works too but may look more purple.
  • Add food coloring gradually to avoid over-coloring. Gel works better for deep tones.
  • Chill on a baking tray for easier transfer in and out of the fridge.
  • Don’t overfill molds —leave a small gap to avoid spills or sticky lids.
  • Use themed toppers or sprinkles to dress them up if serving at a party.
  • For a super spooky look, use clear test tubes, plastic syringes, or fake eyeballs as serving vessels.
  • Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • Do not freeze—they may lose texture and become rubbery.
  • Garnish just before serving to prevent color bleeding or melting decorations.
  • For kid-friendly versions, omit alcohol and use juice or soda.
  • Layer with orange Jello for a festive black-and-orange combo.
  • Use silicone molds for easy release and fun shapes.
